At Turfco all of our turf varieties have such great qualities, so how do you know which one is right for you? A new lawn is a lifelong investment. That’s why we’re here to make sure you get it right!
making the right decision
When choosing a turf variety it is worth considering spending a little bit more upfront on a premium quality grass. This will save you a lot of work and money in the long run.
Consider how much time and money can be spent on product applications. Things like fertiliser, weed and pest control, mowing, weeding other maintenance and water bills to get the result you are after!
The best grass types are the ones proven to perform and are superior to other available species.
what are your options?
For many years the best, and most favoured turf variety in Australia has been Sir Walter DNA Certified. But there are some new comers to the game that may be a better fit for your yard.
Sir Walter DNA Certified
Sir Walter DNA Certified is a broad-leaf buffalo turf. While there are loads of buffalo varieties, there is a reason Sir Walter DNA Certified is Australia’s No.1 buffalo lawn.
It has stood the test of time, is highly versatile and has been proven that it can grow in many areas and conditions.
Sir Walter Buffalo has a soft leaf and high weed-resistance, making it both practical and enjoyable to use. It’s thick growth habit and ability to self-repair makes it the perfect fit for high wear areas and is great for kids and pets.
Sir Walter DNA Certified has great shade tolerance, surviving on as little as 2-3 hours of direct sunlight per day. In saying that, it also loves full sun and can thrive in either condition.
It’s both frost and drought tolerant. This makes it a great fit for the dry conditions of Australia. It is affordable and has quite low maintenance requirements.
All in all, Sir Walter DNA Certified is a great option if you’re looking for a versatile and affordable lawn great for the whole family.
But there are now some new kids on the block vying for the best grass type.
TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda
TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda is the result of over 25 years of research and development and comes out of The University of Georgia in the USA.
It was selected out of almost 30,000 different Bermuda grass varieties. TifTuf showed superior qualities in drought tolerance, wear tolerance, winter colour and shade tolerance compared to the other Bermuda’s. All while maintaining great turf quality.
TifTuf has been specifically bred to withstand harsh and varied climates, such as those experienced in Australia. But with very low inputs while retaining an impressive appearance.
It is a sustainable option for environmentally friendly lawns, sports fields and golf courses. TifTuf uses significantly less water than other grasses – up to 38% less than other warm-season varieties.
It is the perfect choice for an active family or for pet owners due to its self-repairing nature and fast growth. It is also being widely used in sporting fields now because of its ability to repair itself so quickly.
TifTif Vs. Sir Walter
Due to the similarities between them, the main difference to consider when comparing TifTuf and Sir Walter is shade tolerance and looks.
While TifTuf does perform better in the shade than other Bermuda grasses, Sir Walter DNA Certified is superior when it comes to shade tolerance. So if your yard experiences shade susceptible areas we would recommend Sir Walter Buffalo. If you yard receives full sun of at least 5 hours per day, TifTuf is made for you!
The Sir Walter DNA Certified has a broad leaf and TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda has a fine leaf, which is more similar to couch, meaning they look and feel very different. Both have a soft leaf.
Whether you like the look of Sir Walter or TifTuf better comes down to personal preference.
Your situation and taste will be the ultimate decider as to which of these is the best grass type.
Sir Grange Zoysia
Sir Grange Zoysia is a new turf variety in Australia that has been hand-selected out of more than 10,000 different varieties. It is a very fine leaf turf with an extremely dense root system and slow growth habit.
This variety is the closest looking grass type to an artificial lawn. It requires half the mowing of a traditional warm-season turf and can survive with as little as 3-4 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Sir Grange is also a hardy grass that can survive through harsh drought conditions once established and will recover very quickly once water is reapplied. It has very low water input and nutrient input requirements.
While it can handle wear and is self-repairing, due to its slow growth, it requires time to recover after periods of high-use.
Street Appeal
Sir Grange is best for those wanting the perfect looking, low-maintenance and manicured lawn, rather than for the active family. If you want the best-looking lawn on the street, Sir Grange is the best grass type for you!
As mentioned, Sir Grange is an extremely slow-growing variety. While this is one of its many benefits, it will take at least a year in most areas to establish, so we encourage you to be patient and you will see the benefits in time! It is definitely worth the wait!
